Focus on three
I started using a new strategy this year for my business – Focus on Three.
Yes, that’s correct. I’m setting three goals. Three big goals for the year where I can review at the end of the year the impact that they made on my business. Three focused one liners that are already starting to make a difference how I spend my free time, my resources and where I focus my energy.
Why? Because there is so much a great information out there and it’s easy to become overwhelmed. I sat on Twitter the other night and just counted how fast the info came in on my news feed. And that’s not counting my RSS feeds, Facebook and email. Everyone has great info and great ideas.
But the problem is how to use the ones that work – and spend less time debating about the ones I “should” try.
So I’m picking three.
And only three.
After I identified my three, I drafted a plan for how to achieve them. I tend to think well in 90 day blocks so I drafted goals for each 90 days – and then created a series of smaller goals that will help me reach the 90 day goal post.
While I don’t know if the plan will work perfectly, it’s a tool to help me focus my time and resources.
Here’s one of my samples
Relaunch my Website
Why? To increase exposure to my company through a redesigned site that incorporates new products, blog and other web 2.0 elements
1st quarter
- Identify designer and finalize contract.
- Draft text for new site design and finalize copyediting and new graphics.
- Identify events during next 6 months to capture video and photos.
- Gather testimonials.
- Review current e-products and determine what additional products/services to add.
- Draft marketing plan and share with small group of friends and family
2nd quarter
- Finalize text and graphics
- Incorporate new video and social media elements
- Include 2 new e-products
- Implement first 2 stages of marketing plan
3rd quarter – Launch
4th quarter – Review and tweak. Plan follow-up and new opportunities for exposure.
Can I encourage you to try this idea? Take the list of goals that you have been staring at for the long. You know, the one that everytime you look at it …you get overwhelmed.
Select three goals from there and the time frame within which you want to achieve everything.
Now after you’ve selected the three goals, post them some place visible and take ONE action daily towards their achievement. If you work for yourself full time, I challenge you to take 3-4 actions daily. But if it’s not possible, consider taking one step.
Tell me what happens after you’ve tried this idea. What results have happened?
